When it comes to the fishery, co-op groups can work.

That’s the message from FFAW President Keith Sullivan who was commenting on the Fogo Island Co-op Group, which just celebrated 50 years on the island. He says the group has helped improve the economy in the region, and is helping provide a more vibrant community for residents.

The Co-op is currently running three fish plants on Fogo Island.

Sullivan says oftentimes, co-ops are created out of necessity, but they also allow people to come together to find a model that works in the local economy.

He says as the fishery moves forward, the province must maximize benefits and profit, and a co-op can work.
